Five Women Scholars Who Are Taking on New Assignments in Higher Education

Virginia Weis has been named a 2019 Distinguished Professor at Oregon State University. She is a professor in the College of Science and a world leader in coral symbiosis cell biology.

Dr. Weis holds a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Melody Causby has been named an assistant professor of instrumental music education at the University of Southern Mississippi. She currently serves as the interim director of bands at Elon University in North Carolina.

Causby is a graduate of Campbell University in Buies Creek, North Carolina. She holds a master’s degree in music education and is currently completing a Ph.D. in music education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Angela Linse has been elected president of the Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education, an organization that advances the research and practice of effective teaching and learning and faculty development in higher education. She is the executive director of the Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence and the associate dean for teaching in the Office of Undergraduate Education at Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Linse holds a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Washington.

Catherine Crouch has been elected vice chair of the American Physical Society Forum on Education. She currently serves as a professor of physics and has been a faculty member at Swarthmore College since 2003.

Dr. Crouch is a summa cum laude graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, where she majored in physics. She holds a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University.

Kathleen Johnston has been named the founding director of the Michael I. Arnolt Center for Investigative Journalism at Indiana University. She has served as a visiting professor at the university since August 2018.

Professor Johnston is a graduate of Indiana University where she double majored in journalism and political science.
