Six Women Scholars Appointed to Dean Posts in Higher Education

Martha Spack is the new dean of students at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. She joined the staff at the university in 2004 and was named director of the Leadership Center in 2008.

Dean Spack is a graduate of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, where she majored in speech communication. She holds a master’s degree in college student personnel and a doctorate in educational leadership from Arkansas State University.

Marina Kaufman Holz was appointed dean of the graduate School of Basic Medical Sciences at New York Medical College in Valhalla, effective September 1. She held a joint appointment in Stern College at Yeshiva University and in the department of molecular pharmacology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr Holz is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal. She holds a Ph.D. in developmental biology from Harvard Medical School.

Kathleen M. Hagerty was named interim dean of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in Illinois. She has been serving as senior associate dean of faculty and research. Dr. Hagerty has been on the faculty at the university for more than 30 years.

Dr. Hagerty holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, an MBA and a master’s degree in operations research, all from the University of California, Berkeley. She earned a Ph.D. in economics at Stanford University.

Kimberly Durham was promoted to dean of the Abraham S. Fischler College of Education at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. She has been serving as interim dean. Earlier, Dr. Durham was chair of the department of justice and human services and was dean of the Institute for Justice and Human Services.

Dr. Durham holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree, and a doctorate in clinical psychology, all from Nova Southeastern University.

Joan Phillips was appointed dean of the Andreas School of Business at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida. She has been serving as a professor of marketing and associate dean of the Quinlan School of Business at Loyola University in Chicago.

Dr. Phillips is a graduate of the University at Albany of the State University of New York System, where she majored in political science. She earned an MBA at the University of Virginia and a Ph.D. in business administration with a concentration in marketing and statistics from the University of Illinois.

Lynn Rainville was named dean of the college at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. She has been serving as acting dean since March. Before becoming acting dean, Dr. Rainville was associate dean for academic affairs, research professor in the humanities, and director of the Tusculum Institute at the college. She joined the faculty in 2008 after serving for seven years as a visiting professor. Dr. Rainville is the author of several books including Hidden History: African American Cemeteries in Central Virginia (University of Virginia Press, 2014).

Dr. Rainville is a graduate of Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, where she majored in history and anthropology. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and archaeology from the University of Michigan.
