Four Women Announce Their Retirements From High-Level University Posts

Mary Cronin, associate vice president for human resources at Rice University in Houston, Texas, has announced that she will retire on June 30. She joined the staff at Rice University in 2001 after serving as director of human resources at Harvard University. Before becoming Harvard’s director of human resources in 1997, she served as assistant dean and director of personnel services for Harvard Law School for six years.

Cronin is a graduate of Radcliffe College of Harvard University and holds an MBA from Boston University.

Linda Hayden was named professor emerita at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina. She has been on the faculty at the university for 38 years and has served as director of the university’s Center of Excellence in Remote Sensing Education and Research. Early in her career, she taught at Kentucky State University and Norfolk State University.

Professor Hayden is a graduate of Virginia State University. She holds master’s degrees from the University of Cincinnati and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from American University in Washington, D.C.

Sally Graves Machlis, a professor of art and design and art education at the University of Idaho, is retiring. She has served on two occasions as chair of the department of art and design.

Professor Machlis is a graduate of the University of Washington, where she majored in art education. She holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Idaho.

Elizabeth Creamer was named professor emerita at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. She has been serving as a professor of educational research and evaluation in Virginia Tech’s School of Education. Dr. Creamer joined the university in 1982 and also taught in the gender studies program.

Professor Creamer is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She earned a master’s degree at Colorado State University and an educational doctorate at Virginia Tech.
