Connie Ledoux Book to Be the First Woman President of Elon University in North Carolina

The board of trustees of Elon University in North Carolina has selected Constance Ledoux Book at the ninth president of the educational institution. She will assume her new role on March 1, 2018.

Elon University, located east of Greensboro, enrolls about 6,000 undergraduate students and more than 700 graduate students, according to the latest data supplied to the U.S. Department of Education. Women make up 59 percent of the undergraduate student body.

“I am thrilled and humbled to be chosen as Elon’s ninth president,” Dr. Book said. “Elon is one of America’s greatest success stories in higher education, defined by excellence in academics, experiential learning, global engagement and close relationships between students and their faculty and staff mentors. To serve this committed, hardworking, learning-centered community as Elon’s ninth president will be the greatest privilege of my career.”

Dr. Book is no stranger to Elon University. She joined the faculty in 1999 as an assistant professor of communications. In 2006, she was appointed associate dean. Four years later, Dr. Book was promoted to full professor and named associate provost for academic affairs. Dr. Book left Elon in 2015 to become the first woman provost at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina.

Dr. Book earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Louisiana State University, a master’s degree in education administration and supervision from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and a doctorate from the Grady College of Journalism at the University of Georgia.
