Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan Names Its Next Provost

The next provost of Grand Valley State UniversityMaria Cimitile has been selected to serve as provost at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. The campus, located west of Grand Rapids, enrolls nearly 22,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. Women make up 59 percent of the undergraduate student body, according to the latest U.S. Department of Education data.

Dr. Cimitile joined the faculty at Grand Valley State University in 1999 as an assistant professor of philosophy. She has served as associate dean for students and curriculum in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and for the past two years has been associate vice president for academic affairs.

“I’m honored and incredibly excited to accept this appointment,” Dr. Cimitile said. “I have tremendous opportunities to work with the innovative faculty, staff and students at Grand Valley and to expand the unique work we are doing with our community partners. I have the advantage of having worked at the university for nearly 20 years, and I know how talented and dedicated this community is.”

Dr. Cimitile is a graduate of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. She earned a master’s degree in philosophy at Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Memphis.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
