In Memoriam: Jane Huttenlocher, 1932-2016

Jane Huttenlocher, the William S. Gray Professor Emerita in Psychology at the University of Chicago, died late last month in Chicago. She was 84 years old.
Professor Huttenlocher, a leading scholar on how children acquire language and mathematical skills, conducted research and taught at the University of Chicago for 40 years. She was the co-author of Making Space: The Development of Spatial Representation and Reasoning (MIT Press, 2000) and Quantitative Development in Infancy and Early Childhood (Oxford University Press, 2002). Dr. Huttenlocher published her first scholarly article in 1956 and her last nearly 60 years later in 2015.
A native of Buffalo, New York, Professor Huttenlocher was a graduate of the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. at Harvard University. Before coming to the University of Chicago in 1974, Dr. Huttenlocher taught at Columbia University in New York City.
