Six New Women Are on the Faculty at Barnard College in New York City

barnardBarnard College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution for women in New York City, has announced that there are eight new faculty members on campus this fall. Six of the new hires are women.

belinda_archibongBelinda Archibong is a new assistant professor of economics. She is teaching courses on the theoretical foundations of political economy and the logics and limits of economic justice. Dr. Archibong completed her Ph.D. in sustainable development at Columbia University earlier this year. She also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Columbia University.

rachel_austinRachel N. Austin was named the Diana T. and P. Roy Vagelos Professor of Chemistry. She had served on the faculty at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, for the past two decades. Professor Austin is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and earned a Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

kennyGale Kenny was appointed an assistant professor of religion. She has been an adjunct professor at Barnard since 2010. Dr. Kenny is the author of Contentious Liberties: American Abolitionists in Post-Emancipation Jamaica, 1834-1866 (University of Georgia Press, 2010). Dr. Kenny is a graduate of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and holds a Ph.D. from Rice University in Houston, Texas.

mignon_mooreMignon R. Moore is a new associate professor of sociology. She was an associate professor of sociology and African American studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. She taught at UCLA for nine years. Dr. Moore is the author of Invisible Families: Gay Identities, Relationships, and Motherhood Among Black Women (University of California Press, 2011). Dr. Moore is a graduate of Columbia University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago.

anja_tolonenAngela Tolonen is a new assistant professor of economics. She has served as a visiting researcher at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Oxford in England. Dr. Tolonen has also worked as a consultant for the World Bank. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.

christina_vizcarraChristina Vizcarra was appointed an assistant professor of chemistry. She had been serving as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Vizcarra’s research focuses on physical biochemistry. She is a graduate of the University of Kansas and holds a Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology.

Most recently, Dr. Sanders served as vice president of experiential product management and interim vice president of product and technology at Western Governors University.
