In Memoriam: Maravene Sheppard Loeschke, 1947-2015

loeschkeMaravene Loeschke, the former president of Towson University in Maryland, died from complications of cancer on June 25 at Gilchrist Hospice Care in Towson. She was 68 years old.

Dr. Loeschke became president of Towson University in 2012. In April 2014, President Loeschke stated that she had been diagnosed with cancer of the adrenal gland. That August she took a leave of absence from her post and in December 2014 announced that she was stepping down.

President Loeschke became president of Towson University on January 1, 2012. For the previous five years she has been president of Mansfield University in Pennsylvania. Earlier, she was provost at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Before that, Dr. Loeschke had served on the faculty at Towson for 30 years as a professor of drama. She is the author of three books including All About Mime: Understanding and Performing the Expressive Silence (Prentice Hall, 1982).

Dr. Loeschke held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Towson University. She earned a doctorate at the Union Institute in Cincinnati.
