A Dozen Women With New Administrative Jobs in Higher Education

tawneyJanice Tawney was named associate director of development for the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. Tawney was national accounts manager for the Hubbard Peanut Company.

Tawney is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she majored in human relations in business. She earned an MBA from Averett University in Danville, Virginia.

lori-s-whiteLori S. White was appointed vice chancellor for students at Washington University in St. Louis, effective July 1. Currently, she is vice president for student affairs at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

Dr. White is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, where she double majored in psychology and English. She earned an educational doctorate at Stanford University.

ackerLorraine Acker is the new director of the Margaret Sloss Women’s Center on the campus of Iowa State University. Acker is a doctoral student in the School of Education at the university. She previously served as assistant dean of students for minority student support services and women’s programs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Acker is a graduate of the College of Brockport of the State University of New York System, where she majored in African American studies and political science. She holds a master’s degree in college student personnel from Western Illinois University.

140521_14252_kawashima-ginsberg004.jpgKei Kawashima-Ginsberg was named the third director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. She was the deputy director of CIRCLE and has been on the staff at the center since 2008.

Dr. Kawashima-Ginsberg holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Loyola University of Chicago.

lewis1_1Janice Lewis was named director of the J.Y. Joyner Library at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. She has been serving as interim dean of library services at the university since 2012. She joined the library staff at the university in 1999.

Lewis is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She holds a master of library and information science degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a juris doctorate from the University of Virginia School of Law.

kirsten-waarala_lgKirsten Waarala was appointed assistant dean of the Macomb University Center of the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. She was the director of medical education at Garden City Hospital in Michigan.

Dr. Waarala is a graduate of Central Michigan University and the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State.

Simmelink, LauraLaura Simmelink is the new director of alumni relations at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She is a member of the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee of the City of Asheville.

Simmelink is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she majored in interdisciplinary studies. She holds a master of public administration degree from American University in Washington, D.C.

Nicole-Evans

Nicole Edwards Evans was promoted to vice president of enrollment management and institutional research at Jackson State University in Mississippi. She was associate provost for institutional research. She has been on the staff at the university for eight years.

Dr. Evans is a graduate of Jackson State University. She holds a master’s degree in public relations and a doctorate in higher education administration and research from the University of Southern Mississippi.

roberts_sueSue Roberts was named associate dean for international affairs and director of the international studies program for the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of Kentucky. She is a professor of geography at the university.

Professor Roberts is a graduate of the University of Leicester in England. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in geography from Syracuse University in New York.

Sarah_CovertSarah Covert was appointed the inaugural associate vice president for faculty affairs at the University of Georgia. A professor in the university’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, Dr. Covert has served as interim director of the Office of Faculty Affairs since January.

Professor Covert joined the faculty at the University of Georgia in 1993. She is a magna cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College and holds a Ph.D. in bacteriology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Ruth ruthJacobsJacksonJacobs Jackson was promoted to vice president for communications at Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She was assistant vice president for communications at the college. She joined the Colby College staff in 2003.

Jackson is a graduate of Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University in New York City.

jackson_ShannonShannon Jackson, the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Distinguished Professor in the Arts and Humanities, has been named the inaugural associate vice chancellor of arts and design at the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught at Berkeley for 17 years and has chaired the department of theater, dance, and performance studies at the university.

Professor Jackson is a graduate of Stanford University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
