Flyers Threatening a Women’s Studies Lecturer With Rape Found on the University of Akron Campus

akronFlyers threatening a lecturer in women’s studies at the University of Akron in Ohio were found on the walls of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences. According to the Facebook page of the women’s studies program, Dr. Kara Kvaran was threatened with rape and her personal information and home address were included on the flyers.

The statement on the women’s studies Facebook page said that “the threat of sexual violence has long been used to exert social control over women who speak out. We must not let this stop us. Our community and school needs to move forward and let everyone know that this sort of terrorism will not be tolerated.”

Dr. Kvaran issued a statement that read: “As a professor whose mission is to educate about issues of gender equality, I am horrified to be personally targeted by threats of this nature.”

Dr. Kvaran is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in American history and feminist theory from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
