Cornell University’s First Woman President

The board of trustees of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has chosen Elizabeth Garrett as the 13th president of the Ivy League institution. When she takes office on July 1, 2015, she will become the first woman president of Cornell.

Professor Garrett is currently provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She has held this post since 2010. She also serves as the Frances R. and John J. Duggan Professor of Law, Political Science, and Finance and Business Economics and Public Policy. Before joining the faculty at USC, Dr.  Garrett was a professor of law and deputy dean of academic affairs at the University of Chicago.

Professor Garrett is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Virginia School of Law.
