Cynthia Huggins, president of the University of Maine at Machias, has announced that she will retire in December after 10 years as the leader of the university. Dr. Huggins joined the faculty at the university in 1997 as an assistant professor of English. Dr. Huggins will take a position in the publishing field and work to complete a book project she has put aside since becoming president of the university.
“It has been such an honor to serve as UMM’s president for the past decade,” said President Huggins. “This is a very special university, with exceptional staff and faculty who care deeply about our students and consistently do everything possible to support and encourage them. I am very proud of what we have accomplished, working together as a team to keep postsecondary education accessible, affordable, and relevant to the good people of Washington County and throughout eastern Maine.”
President Huggins is a graduate of Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in nineteenth-century British literature from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
