Camilla Cowling, an assistant professor of Latin American history at the University of Warwick in England, was named a finalist for the Frederick Douglass Book Prize. The award, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize, is given jointly by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City and the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
Dr. Cowling is being honored for her book Conceiving Freedom: Women of Color, Gender, and the Abolition of Slavery in Havana and Rio de Janeiro (University of North Carolina Press, 2013).
Dr. Cowling is a graduate of Oxford University. She earned a master’s degree at the University of London and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Nottingham.
