Oklahoma State Professor Emerita Wins Award for the Best Biography of 2013

Linda Leavell, professor emerita of English at Oklahoma State University, was awarded the Plutarch Award from the Biographers International Organization (BIO). The award recognizes the best biography of the year and was presented at the BIO meeting in Boston.

Professor Leavell was honored for her book Holding On Upside Down: The Life and Work of Marianne Moore (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2013). Professor Leavell began working on the biography in 2005 as a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow. Moore was a modernist poet who lived from 1887 to 1972. A native of Missouri, she graduate from Bryn Mawr College and then taught at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where she was a teacher of Jim Thorpe.

Professor Leavell is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, and grew up in Waco, Texas. She holds a Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University.
