Christine A. Hrycyna has been named executive vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of California, San Diego. She will begin her new role on January 1, 2027.
Since 2023, Dr. Hrycyna, a professor of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, has served as dean of UC San Diego’s School of Physical Sciences. Before her current role, she spent more than two decades on the faculty of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, culminating in six years of service as head of the department of chemistry. She held several leadership roles throughout her long tenure with Purdue, including associate department head, head of the biochemistry division, and head of the interdisciplinary life sciences graduate program. As a biochemist, Dr. Hrycyna studies the biochemical basis of aging disorders and cancer at the molecular level as well as the development of new therapeutic strategies for more effective drug delivery to the brain.
Dr. Hrycyna is a graduate of Middlebury College in Vermont, where she majored in chemistry. She received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship as a Jane Coffin Childs Memorial Fund for Medical Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute.
