The University of Wisconsin at Madison has selected four finalists for the position of provost. All candidates will be visiting the Madison campus by the end of the month for interviews and to give public presentations. Three of the four candidates for provost are women.
Sarah C. Mangelsdorf is professor of psychology and dean of the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She is the former dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois. Dr. Mangelsdorf is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio and holds a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota.
Katherine S. Newman is the James B. Knapp Dean and professor of sociology in the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She previously taught at Princeton University and Harvard University. Dr. Newman is a graduate of the University of California at San Diego and holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. She is the co-author of the forthcoming book, After Freedom: The Rise of the Post-Apartheid Generation in Democratic South Africa (Beacon Press, 2014).
Julie Underwood is the dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She first joined the faculty in 1986 but left to serve as dean of the School of Education and Allied Professions at Miami University in Ohio. She returned to the University of Wisconsin in 2005. Dr. Underwood is a graduate of DePauw University in Indiana. She holds a law degree from Indiana University and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Florida.
