Four Women Scholars Awarded Tenure at Carleton College

Carleton College, the highly regarded liberal arts educational institution in Northfield, Minnesota, has announced the awarding of tenure to seven faculty members. The appointments are effective on September 1. Four of the seven faculty members awarded tenure are women.

Catherine Fortin currently serves as an assistant professor of linguistics. Her current research has focused on Indonesian linguistics. Dr. Fortin is a graduate of Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, where she majored in French language and literature. She earned a master’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of Michigan.

Asuka Sango is a member of the religion department faculty. She teaches courses on Buddhism and Chinese and Japanese religions. Her first book, In the Halo of Golden Light: Imperial Authority and Buddhist Ritual in Heian Japan, 796-1185, is forthcoming from the University of Hawaii Press. Dr. Sango is a graduate of Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. She holds a master’s degree in East Asian religions from the University of Illinois and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in East Asian religions from Princeton University.

Katherine St. Clair serves on the faculty of the mathematics department. She joined the Carleton faculty in 2007 and teaches courses on statistics, applied regression, probability, statistical inference, and sampling techniques. Dr. St. Clair is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Duluth. She holds a Ph.D. in statistics from the Twin Cities campus of the University of Minnesota.

Jennifer Wolff is a member of the faculty of the biology department. She is currently working on a National Science Foundation grant project entitled “Identifying New Regulators of Sex-Specific Neurogenesis.” Dr. Wolff is a summa cum laude graduate of Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois. She holds a master’s degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville and a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology and genetics from the University of Minnesota.
