Wesleyan University Promotes Four Women to the Rank of Full Professor

Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, has announced the promotion of eight faculty members to the rank of full professor. Four of the new full professors are women.

Manju Hingorani was promoted to full professor of molecular biology and biochemistry. Her research is focused on repairing mismatch errors that occur during DNA replication.

Dr. Hingorani is a graduate of  K.M.K. College at the University of Bombay in India, where she majored in pharmaceutical sciences. She completed her Ph.D. in 1996 in biochemistry at Ohio State University.

Elizabeth McAlister was named full professor of religion. She has been on the faculty at the university since 1997. Dr. McAlister is the author of Rara! Vodou, Power, and Performance in Haiti and its Diaspora (University of California Press, 2002).

Professor McAlister is a summa cum laude graduate of Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. She holds three master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in American studies from Yale University.

Suzanne O’Connell was appointed full professor of earth and environmental sciences. Her research has focused on studying climate change through paleoceanography. Also, she has been an advocate for increasing the number of women and minorities in the earth sciences.

Dr. O’Connell is a graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree from the University at Albany of the State University of New York system and a Ph.D. from Columbia University.

Stephanie K. Weiner, who was promoted to full professor of English, joined the Wesleyan faculty in 1999. Her main research interest is 19th-century British poetry. She is the author of Republican Politics and English Poetry, 1789–1874 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2005).

Professor Weiner received her bachelor’s degree in English and women’s studies from the University of Minnesota in 1993 and her Ph.D. in modern thought and literature from Stanford University in 1999.
