Five Women in Academia Who Have Been Honored With Prestigious Awards

Eugenia Wang, who holds the Gheens Foundation Chair in Aging Research at the University of Louisville, was awarded the 2013 Alltech Medal of Excellence for her pioneering work exploring the molecular signatures of Alzheimer’s disease, other dementias, and heart disease.
A native of Taiwan, she earned a bachelor’s degree in entomology at the National Taiwan University. She earned a master’s degree at Northern Michigan University in Marquette and a Ph.D. in cell biology at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
Vicki Croft, director of the Animal Health Library at Washington State University in Pullman, received the Founders Award from the International Conference of Animal Health Specialists.
Croft is a graduate of Dana College in Blair, Nebraska. She holds a master of library science degree from the University of Illinois.
Margaret Phillips, vice president for human resources at West Virginia University, received the Excellence in Human Resources Practices Award from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources.
Phillips joined the staff at West Virginia University in 1982 and was appointed to her current post in 2006.
Melissa Harrington, professor of biological science at Delaware State University and director of the Center for Biomedical Research Excellence, a collaboration of Delaware State University and the University of Delaware, was selected to receive the 2013 SMART Woman of the Year Award from Strengthening the Mid-Atlantic Region for Tomorrow (SMART) organization.
Dr. Harrington joined the Delaware State faculty in 2001 and was promoted to full professor in 2010. She is a graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience from Stanford University.
Gabriela Hug, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, has been chosen to receive the Outstanding Young Engineer Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers’ Power and Energy Society. She will be honored at the group’s convention in Vancouver in July.
Dr. Hug holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich.
