Six Women Named to Endowed Chairs

cooperMelMelanie Cooper was named the inaugural Lappan-Phillips Professor of Science Education in the department of chemistry at Michigan State University. She has been serving as the Alumni Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at Clemson University in South Carolina.

Dr. Cooper holds bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry, all from the University of Manchester in England.

SmithAngelaAngela Smith is the inaugural Roger Mudd Professor of Ethics at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She will also be the director of the Roger Mudd Center for Ethics at the university. The chair and the center were made possible by a gift from Roger Mudd, the long-time CBS News correspondent and anchor, who graduated from Washington and Lee in 1950.

Professor Smith joined the Washington and Lee faculty in 2009. Previously, she was a tenured professor in philosophy at the University of Washington.

Dr. Smith is a magna cum laude graduate of Willamette University in Salem, Oregon. She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy at Harvard University.

20110323_kezia_page_108.jpgKezia Page was named to the Arnold A. Sio Chair in Diversity and Community at Colgate University in New York. Dr. Page joined the faculty at Colgate in 2003. She is the author of Transnational Negotiations in Caribbean Diasporic Literature: Remitting the Text (Routledge, 2010).

Dr. Page is a graduate of the University of the West Indies. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in English from the University of Miami.

carol-tenopir-214x300Carol Tenopir was appointed to the College of Communication and Information Board of Visitors Chair at the University of Tennessee. Professor Tenopir is the college’s director of research and is the director of the Center for Information and Communication Studies.

Dr. Tenopir is a graduate of Whittier College in California. She holds a master of library science degree from California State University Fullerton and a Ph.D. in library and information science from the University of Illinois.

belangerFrance Belanger was named the R.B. Pamplin Professor of Accounting and Information Systems at the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg. Professor Belanger joined the Virginia Tech faculty in 1994 and was promoted to associate professor in 2002 and full professor in 2008.

Professor Belanger is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal. She holds a Ph.D. in information systems from the University of South Florida in Tampa.

Wendy SilvermanWendy Silverman was named the inaugural Alfred A. Messer Professor of Child Psychiatry at Yale University. She is the director of the Yale Child Study Center Program for Anxiety Disorders. Prior to joining the Yale faculty, she taught at Florida International University and the University at Albany,

Professor Silverman is a graduate of Binghamton University, a campus of the State University of New York. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
