Drexel University Trains Female Veterans to Compete in the Civilian Economy

Drexel University in Philadelphia has established a set of workshops to ease the transition from military to civilian life for women veterans. The five workshops, held by the university’s Goodwin College of Professional Studies on Saturdays from now through early May, will focus on training the women to use the skills they learned in the military when looking for a job in the civilian economy. Topics include resume writing, the interview process, and entrepreneurship.

In addition to the workshops, participants will be evaluated on personal skills and career outlook. Also, each participant will have two one-on-one coaching sessions with career counselors.

“Female veterans have, historically and currently, higher unemployment rates than their male counterparts,” said Rosalie Guzofsky, director of adult education for the Goodwin College. “And, unlike male veterans, who have lower unemployment rates than male non-veterans, female veterans have higher unemployment than both non-veteran men and women. It is in response to this troublesome data that we designed this innovative program to help unemployed or underemployed female veterans of all campaigns to reintegrate successfully into the civilian labor force.
