In Memoriam: Paula M. Rooney, 1951-2026

Paula M. Rooney, president emerita of Dean College in Franklin, Massachusetts, passed away on March 17. She was 74 years old.

Born in Boston, Dr. Rooney received her bachelor’s degree from Framingham State University in Massachusetts. She later earned her master’s degree and doctorate from Indiana University. Dr. Rooney’s early career in higher education included administrative roles at Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, Indiana University, and Babson College in Massachusetts, where she served as vice president for student affairs.

In 1995, Dr. Rooney was named the thirteenth president of Dean College. She arrived on campus shortly after the institution transitioned from Dean Junior College into a four-year educational institution. Under Dr. Rooney’s leadership, the college launched its first bachelor’s degree programs, modernized campus technology and infrastructure, established numerous external partnerships, and became a member of NCAA Division III athletics. Dr. Rooney retired in 2022 following 27 years of service.

After Dr. Rooney’s retirement, Dean College dedicated the Dr. Paula M. Rooney Student Center in her honor.
