In Memoriam: Suzanne Painter Welsh, 1953-2025

Suzanne Painter Welsh, former vice president of finance and treasurer at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, passed away on February 28. She was 71 years old.

Prior to her career in higher education, Welsh spent six years in corporate finance and accounting. She joined the treasurer staff at Swarthmore College in 1983. Over her long tenure, she rose through the administrative ranks, ultimately becoming vice president of finance in 2002 – a position she held until her retirement in 2015. In honor of her many contributions to the college, Swarthmore established the Suzanne P. Welsh Award in 2011 to recognize staff members who have played a key role in the success of the institution and its students.

Welsh was an honors graduate of the University of Delaware, where she earned bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and accounting. She earned an MBA with a concentration in finance from the University of Pennsylvania.
