Women Represent Just One Fifth of Academic Journal Editors in Finance and Economics

According to a recent study published in the Journal of Business Ethics, women are significantly underrepresented among editors of academic journals in finance and economics disciplines.

The study authors examined the gender distribution of editors on the boards of journals from 73 countries around the world that were listed in the Charted Association of Business Schools rating list as of 2022. Primarily, women journal editors were concentrated in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Overall, the authors found that only 20 percent of all finance journal editors were women. Among women who are members of multiple editorial boards, their representation drops as the number of boards increases. Women represented 21 percent of all editors on two boards, but only 17 percent of those on eight or more boards. Furthermore, women are even more underrepresented among top leaders at finance journals, accounting for just 26 out of 160 total chief editors in 2022.
