Maryam Naghibolhosseini Honored by Sigma Xi for Innovative Research on the Human Voice

Maryam Naghibolhosseini, associate professor of communicative sciences and disorders at Michigan State University, has received the 2023 Young Investigator Award from Sigma Xi, an international scientific research honor society. She was honored for her innovative research on irregularities in the human voice, which can be a sign of a neurological disease or a mental health disorder.

In 2015, Dr. Naghibolhosseini began her career with Michigan State University as a research associate in the department of communicative sciences and disorders. She was named an assistant professor in 2018 and was promoted to associate professor earlier this year. In addition to her primary appointment, she holds a faculty affiliation with the university’s Health and Risk Communication Center. She also serves as director of the Analysis of Voice and Hearing Lab, which researches the underlying mechanisms of voice production.

Before she joined the Michigan State faculty, Dr. Naghibolhosseini held several academic positions with Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, the City University of New York, The New School for Liberal Arts, and St. John’s University in New York.

Originally trained as an engineer, Dr. Naghibolhosseini earned a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran. She received a master’s degree and Ph.D. in speech, language, and hearing sciences from the City University of New York.
