Tina Post, assistant professor of English at the University of Chicago, has received the National Book Circle Award in Criticism for her first book Deadpan: The Aesthetics of Black Inexpression (New York University Press, 2023).
Dr. Post has been with the University of Chicago for the past six years, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in the university’s department of English language and literature. She also holds faculty affiliations with the creative writing program, the Committee on Theatre and Performance Studies, the Center for the Study of Race, Politics, and Culture, and the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality.
As a scholar, her work centers around Black studies, drama and performance studies, and critical theory. Her academic research focuses on racial performativity, especially how Black Americans perform racial identity. She is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Association for the Study of Arts of the Present, which awarded Deadpan with its Best Book Prize in December 2023.
Dr. Post received her bachelor’s degree in English literature from Wells College in New York and a master’s degree in non-fiction creative writing and literary arts from the University of Alaska Anchorage. She holds two master’s degree and a Ph.D. in African American studies and American studies from Yale University.
