Four Women Scholars Granted Tenure at Reed College in Portland, Oregon

Reed College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in Portland, Oregon, has granted tenure to seven faculty members. Four of the faculty members granted tenure are women.

Samiya Bashir joined the faculty at the college in 2012 and teaches courses in creative writing. She is the author of several poetry collections including Where the Apple Falls (RedBone Press, 2005). Bashir is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. She holds a master of fine arts degree from the University of Michigan.

Kara Cerveny was promoted to associate professor of biology. Dr. Cerveny earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in biochemistry, cellular, and molecular biology from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. She then conducted research as a postdoctoral fellow at University College London, before joining the Reed College biology faculty in the fall of 2012.

Catherine Ming T’ien Duffly joined the faculty at Reed College in 2012 and teaches in the theatre department. Earlier she taught at the University of California, Berkeley and the California College of the Arts. Her teaching and research interests include socially engaged and community-based theatre, 20th and 21st century American theatre, race theory, and performance, acting, and directing. Dr. Duffly is a graduate of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She earned a master’s degree from New York University and a Ph.D. in performance studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mariela Szwarcberg Daby was promoted to associate professor of political science. She is the author of Mobilizing Poor Voters: Machine Politics, Clientelism, and Social Networks in Argentina (Cambridge University Press, 2015). Dr. Daby joined the faculty at Reed College in 2012 after teaching at the University of Chicago and the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Daby is a summa cum laude graduate of Torcuato Di Tella University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago.
