Women’s College in South Carolina Partners With a Nearby Technical College

Columbia CollegeColumbia College, a liberal arts educational for women in South Carolina, enrolls about 1,400 undergraduate students and another 100 students in co-educational graduate programs. The college recently entered into an agreement with Midlands Technical College in West Columbia, South Carolina, that will allow students who graduate with an associate’s degree at Midlands Technical College to transfer to Columbia College to earn their bachelor’s degree.

Midlands Technical College has total enrollments of nearly 11,000 students. Women make up 59 percent of the student body.

Students in about 12 academic programs at Midlands Technical College will be eligible for a seamless transfer to Columbia College. These include education, social work, computer science, and nursing. Nursing students at both Columbia College and Midlands Technical College will be able to earn to both an associate’s and a bachelor’s degree in nursing and will have the ability to take the state’s nursing licensing examination after two years of study.

Under the agreement, students at Columbia College will have access to laboratories and equipment at Midlands Technical College that are not currently available at Columbia College.

Dr. Howard joins Spelman from Ohio State University, where she has been serving as dean of the College of Engineering. She is a nationally recognized expert in robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-centered technology.
