The Next President of Bowie State University in Maryland

The next president of Bowie State UniversityAminta Hawkins Breaux was named the next president of Bowie State University in Maryland. She will take office on July 1. The university enrolls about 4,300 undergraduate students and more than 1,000 graduate students. Women make up 62 percent of the undergraduate student body.

In accepting the appointment, Dr. Breaux said, “as a product of public education, I feel a special obligation to help ensure bright and successful futures for students attending our public universities. In collaboration with Bowie State University’s outstanding faculty and staff, a strong community of learners, community and government leaders, and through business partnerships, I will strive to ensure that BSU graduates have a quality educational experience and continue to have a positive impact locally, regionally, and globally.”

For the past three years, Dr. Breaux has served as vice president for advancement at Millersville University, a campus of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. She was vice president for student affairs at Millersville University from 2008 to 2014. Earlier, Dr. Breaux was dean of students at the University of Sciences in Philadelphia and assistant provost at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Dr. Breaux holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a doctorate in counseling psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia. She also earned a master’s degree in psychological services in education from the University of Pennsylvania.
