Elmira College Settles Title IX Complaint Regarding Sexual Harassment and Sexual Violence

Elmira CollegeThe United States Department of Education has announced that it has reached an agreement with Elmira College in New York to a settlement of a student complaint. The department found that the college did not adequately respond to allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

The Office for Civil Rights of the U.S. Department of Education investigated the college’s response to 16 incidents that occurred over a three-year period. The government found that the “college was not prompt in completing its investigation and providing determination to the complainant.” Other violations of Title IX were also found.

The college agreed to take several actions to remedy the violations. These include conducting a bi-annual climate survey of the student body to determine if they are aware of the college’s Title policies and procedures, training staff members on sexual harassment and assault policies and procedures, increasing training for the college’s Title IX officer, and offering information sessions to students on sexual harassment, discrimination, and violence policies and procedures.

The full text of the resolution agreement can be found here.
