In Memoriam: Carol Lancaster, 1942-2014

lancasterCarol Lancaster, dean emerita of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., died on October 22. She was 72 years old. Dr. Lancaster was diagnosed with a brain tumor in November 2013 and stepped down as dean in April 2014.

A native of Washington, D.C., Dr. Lancaster was a graduate of Georgetown University. She held a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Before joining the Georgetown faculty in 1981, Dr. Lancaster was deputy assistant secretary of state for Africa. She later served a three-year term as deputy administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development, before returning to Georgetown in 1996. Dr. Lancaster was named dean of the School of Foreign Service in 2010.

Dr. Lancaster was the author of 10 books including Foreign Aid; Diplomacy, Development, Domestic Politics (University of Chicago Press, 2007) and Transforming Foreign Aid: United States Assistance in the 21st Century (Institute for International Relations, 2000).
