The University of Iowa Press has announced the winners of the 2014 Iowa Short Fiction Awards. Both winners are women with ties to the academic world.
Heather A. Slomski, who held the Axton Fellowship in Fiction at the University of Louisville and taught English at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, was honored for her short story collection The Lovers Set Down Their Spoons. The judge for the competition said Slomski’s stories “comprise an implacable, uncommon contemplation of the systems of disquiet that underpin the common life.” Slomski earned a master of fine arts degree from Western Michigan University.
Kathleen Founds in an instructor in English at Cabrillo College in Watsonville, California. She is a graduate of Stanford University and holds a master of fine arts degree from Syracuse University. Founds is being honored for her short story collection When Mystical Creatures Attack. The interconnected stories take place in South Texas and range from funny to poignant.
Both collections will be published by the University of Iowa Press this fall.
Jennifer Hunt, who has been serving as interim dean of the University of Florida College of Medicine, has been appointed dean of the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. She will be the first woman to lead the Ivy League medical school in its 229-year history
Dr. Gregory was appointed interim president of Jackson State University in May 2025. Prior to that appointment, she was the university's provost and vice president of academic affairs.
Dr. Jones currently serves as vice president of education and chief academic officer at the College of Lake County. She is slated to become the community college's interim president on May 1.
Dr. Ballabina has over three decades of experience with Texas A&M University and the university system. She currently serves as the system's executive vice chancellor.

The selected candidate should have expertise and experience in theoretical models in labor and public economics as well as in microeconometrics and programming.
