Amherst College Adds Eight Women to Its Faculty

amherst-collegeAmherst College, the high-ranked liberal arts institution in western Massachusetts, has added several women to its faculty this fall.

Monica Bel Lopez was hired as a lecturer in Spanish. She holds bachelor’s degrees from the University of Barcelona and the University of Grenada. She is currently completing work on a master’s degree in training teachers of Spanish as a foreign language at the University of Barcelona.

Del MoralSolsiree del Moral is a new associate professor of American studies and Black studies. She holds bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. She also holds a master’s degree from Columbia University. Dr. Moral is the author of Negotiating Empire: The Cultural Politics of Schools in Puerto Rico, 1898-1952 (University of Wisconsin Press, 2013).

dreschJacqueline Dresch was named an assistant professor of mathematics. Dr. Dresch is a graduate of the State University of New York at Genesco. She earned a Ph.D. in mathematics and quantitative biology from Michigan State University.

palmquistCarolyn Palmquist was appointed an assistant professor of psychology. Dr. Palmquist is a graduate of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.

QiYan Qi is a new assistant professor of biology. She was a postdoctoral fellow in the department of molecular biology at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Qi is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. She earned a Ph.D. at Harvard University.

ratiganKerry Ratigan was hired as an assistant professor of political science. Dr. Ratigan is a graduate of Haverford College in Pennsylvania. She earned a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Sahar Sadjadi is an assistant professor of anthropology and an assistant professor of women’s and gender studies. She earned a medical degree at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran and holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and sociomedical sciences from Columbia University.

WalkerVanessa Walker was appointed an assistant professor of history. She is a graduate of Wheaton College and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
