Nearly 40 Million American Women and Girls Are Enrolled in School

Status and Trends in the Education of Racial and Ethnic GroupsAccording to a new report from the United States Census Bureau, in October 2012 there were 39,921,000 women and girls enrolled in all levels of the nation’s schools from nursery school to graduate school. Women and girls were 51 percent of all Americans enrolled in school.

At all levels of schooling through high school, there were slightly higher numbers of males than females. But there were 11,327,000 women enrolled in college or graduate school compared to only 8,602,000 men. There were 4.7 million women of traditional college age (18-21) enrolled in higher education compared to 3.9 million men in the 18-to-21 age group.

Some 7.4 percent of all women over the age of 3 in 2012 were enrolled in college or graduate school compared to 5.9 percent of all males over the age of 3.
