Michaele Whelan Will Be the Ninth President of Wheaton College in Norwood, Massachusetts
Since 2013, Dr. Whelan has been provost at Emerson College in Boston. Earlier in her career, she was vice provost for academic affairs at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and associate dean of academic planning and innovation in the Schools of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts.
University of Chicago’s Young-Kee Kim Joins the Chain of Presidential Succession of the American Physical Society
Dr. Kim is chair of the department of physics at the University of Chicago. She is the Louis Block Distinguished Service Professor in the department and the Enrico Fermi Institute and senior advisor to the provost for global scientific initiatives. In 2024, she will be the ninth scholar from the University of Chicago to become president of the American Physical Society.
Anita Mahadevan-Jansen Is the New President-Elect of SPIE, the International Society for Optics and Photonics
Anita Mahadevan-Jansen is the Orrin H. Ingram Professor of Engineering, director of the Biophotonics Center, and a professor of biomedical engineering at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Mahadevan-Jansen, who joined the faculty at Vanderbilt in 1996, will become president of the society in 2022.
Kindred Murillo Selected to Lead Santa Barbara City College in California
Dr. Murillo has more than 24 years in the California Community College System. Beginning as an adjunct faculty member, she served 11 years as a chief business officer for three districts (Contra Costa, Pasadena Area, Copper Mountain). She was superintendent/president of Lake Tahoe Community College for nine years. She retired earlier this year after nearly four years leading the Southwestern Community College District in Chula Vista, California.
Cathy Cox Has Been Appointed President of Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville
Since 2017, Cox has been serving as dean of Mercer University School of Law in Macon, Georgia. Earlier, she was president of Young Harris College in Young Harris, Georgia, for 10 years. Cox served two terms in the Georgia House of Representatives and later was the first woman in the state’s history to be elected Secretary of State in Georgia.
University of Kentucky Scholar Named President of the Association for Popular Music Education
Martina Vasil is an associate professor of music education at the University of Kentucky. She teaches undergraduate courses in general music methods and graduate courses in music education research and popular music education. Her primary research interests are popular music education, children’s musical culture, and mentoring practices in music teacher education.
Gloria Thomas Selected as the Next President of HERS
Dr. Thomas comes to HERS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she served as the director of the Carolina Women’s Center. Prior to her time at UNC, Dr. Thomas served as the executive director of the Center for the Education of Women at the University of Michigan.
Pamela Chally Will Be the New Leader of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville
Dr. Chally has been with the University of North Florida for 28 years, most recently serving as the interim provost and vice president of academic affairs from 2017 to 2019. She was previously the dean and a professor of nursing in the university’s Brooks College of Health.
Strayer University Appoints Andrea Backman as Its Seventeenth President
Dr. Backman has been serving as acting president since November 2020. Earlier, she was chief employability officer for Strategic Education Inc., the university’s parent firm. Earlier in her career, Dr. Backman was the chief academic officer at Rasmussen College in Minneapolis.
Rhea Law Selected to Lead the University of South Florida
Law is the former chief executive officer and chair of the board of Fowler White Boggs, a Florida law firm. She led the merger of that firm with a national firm, Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney in 2014. President Law was one of the founding members of the USF board of trustees, where she spent five years as vice chair and four years as the first and only female chair.
The Next President of Volunteer State Community College in Gallatin, Tennessee
Since 2017, Dr. Orinthia T. Montague has been president of Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, New York. She previously served as vice president of student affairs and chief diversity officer, and dean of students, at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, and as dean of students at the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
Charlotte Morris Appointed the Ninth President of Tuskegee University in Alabama
For over three decades, Dr. Morris has served in several roles at Tuskegee University including chief of staff to the president and secretary to the board of trustees. Most recently, Dr. Morris served as the director of the university’s Title III program.
Sheila Edwards Lange Chosen to Be the Next Chancellor of the University of Washington-Tacoma
Dr. Edwards Lange has been serving as president of Seattle Central College. She was the vice president for minority affairs and diversity for the University of Washington from 2007 to 2015. Dr. Edwards Lange is scheduled to become chancellor at the University of Washington-Tacoma on September 16.
La Jerne Terry Cornish to Lead Ithaca College for the 2021-22 Academic Year
Dr. Cornish has been serving as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Ithaca College since 2018. Earlier, she was associate provost for undergraduate studies at Goucher College in Baltimore. She joined the faculty at Goucher in 1998 as an instructor of English.
Daphne Rudicell Robinson Will Be the Last President of Judson College in Alabama
Daphne Rudicell Robinson is the 24th president of Judson College in Marion, Alabama. When she took office on July 19, she became the first woman to lead the women’s college. Her tenure will be short-lived. The college plans to close its doors on July 31.
Daisy Cocco De Filippis Appointed President of Hostos Community College in New York
Dr. Cocco De Filippis returned to Hostos Community College in 2020 as interim president after a 12-year tenure as president of Naugatuck Valley Community College in Connecticut. From 2002 to 2008, she served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Hostos Community College.
Mary Gutierrez Named Chancellor of the Taos Campus of the University of New Mexico
Dr. Gutierrez has been serving as vice president of instruction at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill, California. She also was an instructor in educational leadership at San Francisco State University. Earlier, Dr. Gitierrez was dean of language arts and as acting president at Skyline College in San Bruno, California, and associate dean at Cascadia College in Bothel, Washington.
LaTonia Collins Smith Is the New Leader of Harris-Stowe State University in St Louis
Dr. Collins Smith is serving as interim president. She had been serving as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Collins Smith began her career in higher education at Harris-Stowe State University in 2010 as a project coordinator in the Office of Counseling Services.
Kristin Esterberg Appointed Chancellor of the University of Washington-Bothell
Dr. Esterberg has been serving as president of the State University of New York at Potsdam. Prior to her term as SUNY Potsdam president, which began in 2014, Dr. Esterberg served as provost and academic vice president at Salem State University in Massachusetts and as deputy provost at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. She will take on her new duties on October 1.
Patty Pfeiffer to Lead Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, North Carolina
Dr. Pfeiffer has been serving as the college’s vice president for academic and student services. She has been employed at the college since November 1994 when she joined the faculty as a nursing instructor. Dr. Pfeiffer has also served as nursing department chair, Allied Health and Public Services Division dean, chief of staff, and vice president of institutional effectiveness and innovation.
Teresa MacCartney Appointed Acting Chancellor of the University System of Georgia
Since 2019, MacCartney has served as executive vice chancellor for administration. In this role, she managed the university system’s day-to-day management of departments that include cybersecurity, leadership and institutional development, economic development, legal affairs, organizational effectiveness, human resources, real estate and facilities, internal audits, and safety and security.
Muriel B. Mickles is the New Leader of Danville Community College in Virginia
Dr. Mickles had been serving as vice president of academics, students, and workforce development at Central Virginia Community College in Lynchburg. She will serve as interim president of Danville Community College while a search for a permanent president is conducted.
Syracuse University in New York Has Selected Gretchen Ritter as Its Next Provost
Since 2019, Dr. Ritter has been serving as executive dean and vice provost for the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio State University. In 2013, Dr. Ritter was appointed the 21st dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She was the first woman to hold the position.
Melissa Nobles Appointed Chancellor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
The provost and chancellor are the Institute’s two most senior academic appointments; both report to the president of MIT. The chancellor oversees matters including admissions, teaching and learning, residential life, student support, and efforts to prevent sexual harassment and misconduct. Dr. Nobles has been serving as dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at MIT.

Prescott College in Arizona Names Barbara Morris as Its New President
Barbara Morris currently serves as associate vice provost and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs for the State University System of New York. Prior to her current role at SUNY, Dr. Morris served as president of SUNY Oneonta. Earlier, she spent 15 years on the faculty at the University of Redlands in California.
Kimberly Ballard-Washington Is the New President of Savannah State University in Georgia
Kimberly Ballard-Washington has served as interim president since July 2019. Earlier, she was associate vice chancellor for legal affairs for the University System of Georgia and is the former associate director of legal affairs for the flagship campus of the University of Georgia in Athens.
Contra Costa Community College in California Appoints Tia Robinson-Cooper as President
Dr. Robinson most recently served as the provost and vice-president of academic affairs/chief academic officer at Inver Hills Community College, a campus of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities.
Dione Somerville is the New President of Owens Community College in Perrysburg, Ohio
Dr. Somerville has held leadership positions at Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine, Lorain County Community College, Iowa State University, Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, and most recently Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo, Iowa, where she was executive vice president.

Danielle Wilken Appointed President of the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut
The University of Bridgeport was recently acquired by Goodwin University in East Hartford, Connecticut. The Bridgeport campus will retain its name and will have independent leadership. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Wilken has been serving as provost and dean of faculty at Goodwin University.

Professor Harvey is a professor of politics at New York University. She also serves as the founding director of the Public Safety Lab a community-engaged research initiative that draws on the dual lenses of social science and data science to provide insight into mass incarceration and recommendations for improvement of the criminal justice system.

Dr. Stephanie Fujii has been serving as vice president of academic affairs at Scottsdale Community College within the Maricopa Community College District in Arizona, a position she has held since 2016. Dr. Fujii will begin her new job on July 12.
