In Memoriam: Mary Louise Gude, 1939-2013

mary_louise_gude_200Mary Louise Gude, the former assistant vice president for student affairs the University of Notre Dame, died last week in Saint Mary’s Convent after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. She was 73 years old.

Sister Gude was a 1963 graduate of St. Mary’s College. She held a Ph.D. in French literature from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Gude began her academic career as an assistant professor of French at St. Mary’s College. She taught in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Notre Dame from 1991 to 1999 and 2000 to 2006. She served as vice president for student affairs from 1998 to 2006. From 2009 to 2011, when she was forced to retire due to her illness, she was vice president for mission at St. Mary’s College.
