New Study Shows College-Age Women Are the Most Likely to Be Binge Drinkers

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANew data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that binge drinking is a significant and growing problem among women and high school girls. Binge drinking for women is defined as consuming four or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion.

The statistics show that one in eight women over the age of 18 binge drink. And the problem is even worse among high schools girls and college-age women. One of five high school girls binge drink on a regular basis. And nearly one quarter of college-age women are binge drinkers. For those who binge drink, women average six drinks per occasion and have three binge drinking sessions each month.

The CDC estimates that 23,000 women each year die as a result of binge drinking incidents. Also binge drinking is believed to increase chances for breast cancer, heart disease, unintended pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases.
