Pomona College, the highly selective liberal arts educational institution in Claremont, California, has announced the appointment of four scholars to endowed professorships.
“These donor-funded professorships are a vital resource for supporting faculty research and teaching excellence, and appointments are made to recognize exemplary scholarship and service to the college,” says Brent Carbajal, interim vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college.
Three of the new appointments to endowed positions went to women.
Amanda L. Hollis-Brusky, professor of politics, was appointed to the Charles and Henrietta Johnson Detoy Professorship in American Government. She teaches courses on American politics, constitutional law, and legal institutions. Her research examines the dynamics of constitutional change and the role “support structures” play in that process. Dr. Hollis-Brusky is the co-author of Separate But Faithful: The Christian Right’s Radical Struggle to Transform Law and Legal Culture (Oxford University Press, 2020). Professor Hollis-Brusky is a graduate of Boston University, where she majored in philosophy and political science. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Jane M. Liu, professor of chemistry, was appointed the inaugural holder of the Osler-Loucks Memorial Endowed Professorship in Science. She joined the faculty in 2012 and teaches general chemistry, chemical biology, and the analysis of scientific literature. Her research projects focus on gene regulation in bacteria and mechanisms that contribute to the persistence of the bacterial pathogen that causes cholera disease. Dr. Liu is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in biochemistry. She holds a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University and did postdoctoral research at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.
Colleen Rosenfeld, professor of English, was appointed to the Phebe Estelle Spalding English Professorship. She joined the faculty in 2010 and recently served for two years as interim director of College Writing. Dr. Rosenfeld specializes in the study of early modern poetry and poetics. She is the author of Indecorous Thinking: Figures of Speech in Early Modern Poetics (Fordham University Press, 2018). She is writing a second book titled Seeing Things Otherwise: Variations on Form in Shakespeare and Picasso. Professor Rosenfeld is a graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
