The American Political Science Association is the world’s largest professional organization for the study of politics with more than 15,000 members in more than 80 countries. The association publishes the journals Perspectives on Politics, The American Political Science Review and PS: Political Science & Politics.
The association has named two women scholars to serve as vice presidents of the organization.
Nancy Hirschmann is a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She is a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. She is the author of Gender, Class, and Freedom in Modern Political Theory (Princeton University Press, 2007) and The Subject of Liberty: Towards a Feminist Theory of Freedom (Princeton University Press, 2002).
Anne-Marie Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter ’66 University Professor of Politics and International Affairs at Princeton University. From 2009–2011 she served as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State. She previously taught at Harvard Law School. Professor Slaughter is a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in international relations at Oxford University. Dr. Slaughter is the author of The Idea that Is America: Keeping Faith with Our Values in a Dangerous World (Basic Books, 2007) and A New World Order (Princeton University Press, 2005).
