Computer Scientist Leaving Carnegie Mellon University to Take Post at Microsoft

Jeannette Wing, chair of the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, announced that she is leaving the academic world to take a position with Microsoft Research. She will be a vice president at Microsoft Research and director of Microsoft Research International with responsibilities for research laboratories in Bangalore India, Beijing, China, and Cambridge, England.

Dr. Wing joined the faculty at Carnegie Mellon in 1985 and became chair of the computer science department in 2004. From 2007 to 2010 she was the assistant director of the Computer and Information Science Directorate at the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Wing holds a bachelor’s degree in computer science, a master’s degree in electrical engineering, and a Ph.D. in computer science, all from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
