Denise Bruesewitz has been appointed provost of Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She will assume her new role on July 1, following the retirement of current provost Margaret McFadden.
A Colby College faculty member since 2012, Dr. Bruesewitz currently serves as chair of the interdisciplinary studies division and one of two faculty representatives to the college’s board of trustees. In addition to her administrative responsibilities, she is an associate professor of environmental sciences and studies with a focus on how humans impact aquatic ecosystem function. Her scholarship spans the fields of ecology, bio-geochemistry, limnology, nutrient cycling, science communication, and coastal systems. As an academic leader on campus, she is a member of the Future of Sciences at Colby committee, overseeing the college’s investment in STEM programming.
Upon her new appointment, Dr. Bruesewitz said, “I am eager to continue and expand the good work that Margaret and her staff have accomplished, and that means making sure the faculty feel supported to build academic programs they are passionate about, strengthen collaborations across campus, and support our centers, labs, and institutes in all the innovative work they are doing.”
Dr. Bruesewitz holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and ecology from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana and a Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Waikato in New Zealand.
