The Falls Center in Philadelphia is an urban renewal project that will include offices, apartments, and stores. The 12-acre site is located at the site of the former Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Construction workers recently discovered a time capsule that was sealed in 1930 and placed behind the cornerstone of the medical college’s main building.
The metal box included newspapers, magazines, photographs, and pamphlets about the medical college. Also included was a gold coin honoring Susan B. Anthony.
The Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania was founded in 1850, the first school in the world dedicated to the education of women physicians. In 1970 it became the Medical College of Pennsylvania. In 2002 the institution was absorbed into the Drexel University College of Medicine.
The campus where the time capsule was found was closed in 2005. The contents of the time capsule will be displayed at the Legacy Center at the Drexel University College of Medicine.
