Four Women Leaders Who Have Received University Provost Appointments

Terri Gomez has been named the permanent provost and vice president for academic affairs at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. She has held the position in the interim for the past eight months. She has been with the university for over two decades, serving in numerous academic and administrative roles such as professor of ethnic and women’s studies, department chair, and the inaugural associate vice president for student success.

Dr. Gomez is a three-time graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles, where she received her bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in political science.

Angela W. Peters has been named provost and vice president of academic affairs at Voorhees University in South Carolina. With over three decades of higher education experience, she most recently served as chief academic officer and provost at Albany State University in Georgia. Earlier in her career, she served as vice provost of academic programs, chair of the chemistry department, and professor of chemistry at Claflin University in South Carolina.

Dr. Peters earned her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in chemistry from Hampton University in Virginia. She received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of South Carolina.

Susan Bon has been appointed executive vice president and provost at Pittsburg State University in Kansas. She recently served as interim associate dean for research and faculty affairs in the College of Education at the University of South Carolina. She has previously held teaching appointments with George Mason University in Virginia, Ashland University in Ohio, and Pennsylvania State University.

Dr. Bon is a cum laude graduate of the University of Toledo in Ohio, where she majored in political science. She holds a juris doctorate, as well as a master’s degree and Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership from Ohio State University.

Denise Jones Gregory has been named provost and vice president for academic affairs at her undergraduate alma mater Jackson State University in Mississippi. Most recently, she served as associate provost of student success and diversity at Samford University in Alabama. In addition to her adminstrative role, she served as a professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Gregory is a magna cum laude graduate of Jackson State University, where she majored in chemistry. She received her Ph.D. in chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
