Columbia University Honors Carolyn Woods Eisenberg With the 2024 Bancroft Prize in American History

Carolyn Woods Eisenberg, professor of United States history and American foreign relations at Hofstra University in New York, has been awarded the 2024 Bancroft Prize in American History and Diplomacy from Columbia University Libraries. She was recognized for her book, Fire and Rain: Nixon, Kissinger, and the Wars in Southeast Asia (Oxford University Press, 2023).

As a faculty member with Hofstra University, Dr. Eisenberg specializes in foreign policy, twentieth-century American history, the Cold War, and issues of war and peace. In addition to her most recent award-winning book, she is the author of Drawing the Line: The American Decision to Divide Germany, 1944-1949 (Cambridge University Press, 1996), which won the Herbert Hoover Library Prize and the Stuart Bernath Book Prize from the Society of Historians and Foreign Relations. She has served as the New York Historical Society’s consultant for their exhibition on Vietnam, as well as the legislative coordinator for Historians for Peace and Democracy.

Dr. Eisenberg completed her undergraduate education at the University of Chicago. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Columbia University.
