Heather Bruce Satrom Honored for Her Innovative Project Documenting Stories of Immigrant Students

Heather Bruce Satrom, professor at Montgomery College in Maryland, has received the Faculty Innovation Award from the American Association of Community Colleges in recognition of her project, “History in the Making.” The oral history project contains interviews of immigrant and refugee students at Montgomery College, aiming to gain a better understanding of their experiences and open the door for new academic opportunities.

At Montgomery College, Satrom has taught non-native speakers of English in the English Language for Academic Purposes program for nearly two decades. During her tenure, she has served as the program’s coordinator and an academic advisor. Prior to her role with Montgomery College, she held positions with the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of American History and Brevard Community College in Florida.

Satrom is a graduate of American University where she majored in journalism. She holds a master’s degree in teaching English for speakers of other languages, as well as teaching French, from what is now known as the School of International Training Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, Vermont.
