Columbia Professor Anne Bogart Awarded for Lifetime Achievement in Non-Profit Theatre Production

Anne Bogart, a professor of theatre and head of the concentration in directing at Columbia University, has received the Gordon Davidson Award from the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation in recognition of her lifetime achievements and distinguished service in non-profit theatre production.

Bogart has spent over five decades in the theatre industry, serving as a director, writer, and choreographer. Outside of her appointments with Columbia University, Bogart is the founding co-artistic director of the SITI Company, an ensemble-based theatre company in New York City. Her contributions to the field have earned her four honorary doctorates from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, Bard College in New York, and Cornish College in Seattle, Washington.

In addition to her artistic endeavors, Bogart is the author of six books on the techniques of theatre directing and production: A Director Prepares (Routledge, 2001), The Viewpoints Book (Theatre Communications Group, 2004), And Then, You Act (Routledge, 2007), Conversations with Anne (Theatre Communications Group, 2012), What’s the Story (Routledge, 2014), and The Art of Resonance (Methuen Drama, 2021).

Bogart holds a bachelor’s degree from Bard College and a master’s degree from New York University.
