Center for Global Women’s Health and Gender Equity Established at Johns Hopkins University

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, has established the Center for Global Women’s Health and Gender Equity. The center will be led by Michele Decker, Bloomberg Professor of American Health for the department of population, family, and reproductive health in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

The new center was created to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls by 2030. It will serve as a global research hub where scholars in the field can collaborate on efforts to address gender inequity. Additionally, the center will provide training and mentoring opportunities for Johns Hopkins students and outside partners.

“The center is strategically built to address the contemporary challenges in gender equity, lending Johns Hopkins’ exceptional expertise and training capabilities to enhance scientific excellence and expand the talent pool of applied researchers and evidence-informed leaders for sustained impact,” says Dr. Decker. 

Dr. Decker holds a bachelor’s degree in community health and women’s studies from the University of Rochester in New York. She earned a master’s degree in public health and maternal and child health, and a Ph.D. in social epidemiology from Harvard University.
