Four Women Faculty Members Who Are Taking on New Roles

Cheri Canon has been selected as the next president of the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation, and chief physician executive of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Health System, effective May 1. Dr. Canon has served as the chair of the department of radiology since 2011 and holds the Witten-Stanley Endowed Chair of Radiology. She is also the chief clinical integration officer for the UAB Health System.

Dr. Canon completed her undergraduate training at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a graduate of the medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Nicki Wise was appointed associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Veterinary Medicine at Clemson University in South Carolina. She is the former professor and associate dean of year-four clinical training at St. George’s University School of Veterinary Medicine in Grenada.

Dr. Wise is a graduate of Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, where she majored in biology. She earned a doctor of veterinary medicine degree at the University of Georgia and holds a Ph.D. from Washington State University.

Mediget Teshome is the new chief of breast surgery and director of breast health for the University of California, Los Angeles Health System. Before joining UCLA, Dr. Teshome was an associate professor at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in the department of breast surgical oncology.

After completing her undergraduate education at UCLA, Dr. Teshome earned her medical degree from University of Michigan. Additionally, she earned a master of public health degree at Harvard University.

Elizabeth Hiltbold Schwartz, an associate professor in the department of biological sciences at Auburn University in Alabama, was given the added duties of assistant dean of biomedical sciences. Her research focuses on immunology and host/microbe interactions.

Dr. Schwartz is a graduate of Auburn University. She earned a Ph.D. at Emory University in Atlanta.
