Five Women Faculty Earn Promotions at Pomona College

Pomona College, the highly rated liberal arts college in Claremont, California, has promoted 12 members of its faculty to associate professorships. Five of the 12 faculty members receiving promotions to associate professor are women.

JoAnne Ferguson, the women’s softball coach at Pomona, was promoted to associate professor of physical education. She joined the Pomona College faculty in 2006. Coach Ferguson is a graduate of Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania. She earned a master’s degree at the University of Virginia.

Gizem Karaali was appointed associate professor of mathematics. She joined the Pomona faculty in 2006 and teaches algebra and calculus. Dr. Karaali is a graduate of Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Susan McWilliams joined the Pomona faculty in 2006 and has now been promoted to associate professor of political science. She is a graduate of Amherst College in Massachusetts and holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. from Princeton University.

Mary Paster is an associate professor of linguistics and cognitive science. She joined the Pomona faculty in 2006. Dr. Paster is a graduate of Ohio State University and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley.

Frederike von Schwerin-High was promoted to associate professor of German. She joined the faculty at Pomona College in 2005. She is a graduate of the University of Heidelberg and holds master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts.
