Four Universities Announce the Appointments of Women to Provost Positions

Sheryl A. Tucker has been selected as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. She has been serving as vice provost and dean of the graduate college for the graduate campuses of the Oklahoma State University System. She joined Oklahoma State University in 2011 as dean and professor of chemistry. Earlier, she taught for 15 years at the University of Missouri.

Dr. Tucker earned a bachelor’s degree from Kent State University in Ohio. She holds a master’s degree from the University of North Texas and a doctorate from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina.

Elizabeth Skomp was named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. She has been dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the university since 2019. Dr. Skomp is also a professor of world languages and cultures, specializing in Russian. Earlier, in her career, she was associate dean for faculty development and inclusion at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Dr. Skomp is the co-author of Ludmila Ulitskaya and the Art of Tolerance (University of Wisconsin Press, 2015).

Dr. Skomp earned a bachelor’s degree at Indiana University. She holds a Ph.D. from University College London, where she was a Marshall Scholar.

Charlene D. Gilbert was appointed provost and senior vice president of academic affairs at Clark Atlanta University in Georgia, effective June 1. Dr. Gilbert currently serves as the senior vice provost for student academic excellence at Ohio State University. Prior to this position, Dr. Gilbert served for five years as the dean of the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Toledo. Earlier, she was the dean of one of Ohio State’s four regional campuses located in Lima, Ohio. There, she was a professor in the department of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies.

Dr. Gilbert earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science from Yale University. She holds a master of fine arts degree from Temple University in Philadelphia and a Ph.D. in educational studies from the University of Nebraska.

Christina Schnyders has been appointed provost at Malone University in Canton, Ohio. She is the first woman to hold the position. Dr. Schnyders joined the staff at the university in 2006 as a resident director. She began teaching in 2011 and later served as director of the counseling program. Dr. Schnyders has been serving as interim provost since July 2022.

Dr. Schnyders is a graduate of Simpson University in Redding, California, where she majored in psychology. She holds a master’s degree in clinical and pastoral counseling from the Ashland Theological Seminary in Ohio and a doctorate in counseling and human development services from Kent State University in Ohio.
